I DON'T FEEL ANY PAIN, SO WHY DO I NEED A CHIROPRACTOR?
Just feeling "OK" isn't an indicator of health. For instance, symptoms don't start the moment the first cancer cells invade the body but we all know that the earlier the condition is detected the better chances for survival. Chiropractors find and fix vertebral subuxations. Subluxations are mostly unnoticed misalignments or improper motion of the joints in the spine. Given time, these subluxations can lead to joint inflammation, abnormal muscle function, eventual abnormal nervous system function and eventually pain symptoms and dysfunction. Periodic adjustments take care of small, unfelt problems before they have a chance to be become big ones.
I HAVE HEARD ONCE YOU START GOING, YOU HAVE TO KEEP COMING. IS THAT TRUE AND IF SO WHY?
Some people feel that a spinal condition is cured once the pain symptoms go away. This is actually when the healing is just beginning. Most conditions that come from years of neglect cannot be corrected overnight. Like Rome and your body, the spinal damage was not done in one day, and most definitely won't be fixed in one day. The neurons that were damaged by the compression need time to heal and return to a normal state and then the muscles, ligaments and fascia need time to adapt to the new position and motions of the vertebra. Many patients erroneously discontinue care as soon as their symptoms are gone. Let me pose a question for you. When do you stop going to see the dentist or brushing and flossing your teeth? Just as healthy teeth are maintained by regular dental exams, spinal conditions should be maintained under close supervision throughout your lifetime by a licensed chiropractor. Symptoms can often be relieved quickly, but lasting spinal correction requires time. The chiropractor gives your body a chance to heal itself naturally by restoring the full nerve supply needed for the job. Along with the adjustment, we may recommend exercises, nutritional supplements and changes, stress reduction and other natural means to help your body heal itself.
WHAT IS A SUBLUXATION AND WHAT DOES IT DO?
A subluxation is a minor misalignment of the spine (vertebrae) causing irritation to a nerve with a loss of normal NERVE function. When a vertebrae is misaligned it puts pressure on the nerves cutting off communication from the brain to that area supplied by the nerve. This interruption causes organs, tissues, and muscle to lose their function. Subluxation will also cause a lowered resistance to disease A subluxation can be caused by ANY stress that the person's body cannot adapt to. The stress can be emtional, physical or chemical. By visiting the chiropractor and removing the subluxation, the neurons become less irritated, can heal themselves and allow the body its normal process to keep it health and homeostatic or balanced. With the nervous system functioning properly, health is restored.
HOW DID I GET A SUBLUXATION?
There are three basic causes of subluxation: physical, emotional and chemical causes. Physical cuases such as repetative motions, slips, falls accidents etc. Stress, anger and fear are emotional causes. Alcohol, drugs, pollution and poor diet are examples of chemical causes.
HOW DO I KNOW IF I HAVE A SUBLUXATION?
One of the most commonly reported symptoms of subluxation is pain. However similar to cancer or tooth decay subluxations can be present before any warning signs appear. If you have never been adjusted before, chances are you have had a subluxation since your birth.
WILL A SUBLUXATION CLEAR UP ON ITS OWN?
Sometimes. Today's hectic lifestyles are a constant source of subluxation. Fortunately our bodies have the ability to self correct when we bend stretch or sleep at night. When they don't get better is when you need the chiropractor.
WHAT IS AN ADJUSTMENT AND WHAT DOES IT DO?
A Chiropractic adjustment is the use of a specific force in a precise direction that helps restore spinal motion and function, which will reduce neurological stress and allow your body to heal and perform better. The adjustment is applied to a joint that is not moving normally, or "fixated". Adjustments help return the bones to a more normal position, allowing better motion of the joint and restoring body's natural healing. Adjustments help normalize spinal function, improve nervous system function and avoid bone and soft tissue degeneration. When nervous system function improves , the body can begin the natural healing process with less interruption.
WILL ADJUSTMENTS MAKE MY SPINE TOO " LOOSE"?
No. Only the spinal joints that are " locked up" receive adjustments. This will allow weakened muscle and ligaments to stabilize and heal.
WHO CAN CHIROPRACTIC HELP?
Improved nerve communications between your brain and body help EVERYONE. So if you have subluxations, you are a good candidate for chiropractic care. Modifying adjustment approaches can help people in multiple age brackets, from newborns to elderly.
CAN I GET CHIROPRACTIC CARE IF I'VE HAD BACK SURGERY?
Yes. The doctor will avoid areas of your spine that have been surgically modified. However surgery often causes instability above or below the involved level. These reactions will be he focus of your chiropractic care
CAN I GET CHIROPRACTIC CARE IF I HAVE OSTEOPOROSIS?
Yes. The technique that the doctor will use may vary depending on how severe the bone loss if but regardless of your age, size or condition chiropractic can be helpful.
CAN I GET MY CHILD GET CHIROPRACTIC CARE?
Yes. Even the " natural" and "modern" childbirth process can affect the infant's spine. Preliminary studies suggest that colic, unusual crying, poor appetite, ear infections and erratic sleeping behavior can be a sign of spinal distress. Newborn adjustments are adjusted differently and far more gently than adults (as a rule , no more pressure than you'd use to test the ripeness of a tomato.
WHAT DO ADJUSTMENTS FEEL LIKE AND WHAT'S THAT SOUND?
Lubricating fluids separate the bones of every spinal joint. Some adjustment methods produce a sound like a "popping or cracking" that they feel when thrust is made. This sound (called cavitation) is very common when getting adjusted although not an indictaor of quality or value of the adjustment.
After the adjustment, many patients report a sense of well-being or a feeling of calmness. Others feel improved mobility. Inflammation or muscle spasms may delay these positive effects and may leave a patient feeling sore at first, but it will reduce with consistent treatment in the beginning.
IS IT SAFE?
YES! Chiropractic adjustments are very safe. Even newborns and children receive adjustments to repair the damage caused from the birth process, learning to walk, or other childhood trauma. Each adjustment is tailored to each patient's age, size, and unique spinal problem. After years of training, each Chiropractor has selected a variety of methods and become skilled in their delivery.
In fact, adverse effects of medical treatment is the principal cause of death in people under 45 years of age, and 3rd most common cause of death in the United States. Taking an over-the-counter pain reliever is about 100 times more risky than receiving an adjustment.
WHY AN ADJUSTMENT?
Chiropractic adjustment corrects Vertebral Subluxations. An adjustment helps your body to restore itself to optimum health! When the bones that protect the spinal cord lose their normal position and start moving incorrectly, delicate nerve tissue can become choked or irritated. If a thorough examination reveals malfunctioning areas of the spine, Chiropractic adjustments are recommended to help correct this malfunction, so your body can repair the neurological damage these misalignment cause.
Each day millions of people choose Chiropractic over drugs or surgery, as a common sense approach to better health; treating cause, not symptoms.
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO FIX MY PROBLEM?
Some people enjoy results quickly, in a matter of days. Other patients may notice a slow gradual decline over several weeks, months, or longer with chiropractic care. Since chiropractic care depends on the healing ability of each patient, results can vary from patient to patient It's impossible to predict, but if you've had your problem for many years improvement can take time.
